How to find the perfect architect for you?
First up, nobody wants to buy a drill, they want to buy a hole. This will make sense later……promise.
Your decision to renovate your property is probably the most important you’ve made this week, now the most important decisions you’ll make this year are based around who helps you create that space.
I think the best place to start is ‘Are you really looking for an architect?’, it might sound like a silly question really, of course you are, you’re looking to design a building, and architects design buildings. Realistically anyone with a flare for design and a copy of Auto CAD, or even if they are hand drawn can design a building.
Architecture as a trade is a long university course that a lot of people just don’t want to complete, technically you can get half way through that course and think that’ll do I’ll be fine from here. Set themselves up as ‘architectural technicians’ or ‘architectural services’. Some people may say not ‘real’ architects, but having worked with some absolutely brilliant architectural technicians who have been able to provide some stunning drawings, which we’ve then used to create some amazing homes.
Now there’s no hard and fast rule that an ARB registered architect will be better, or that an architectural technician will be worse. They are both creative people with experience, knowledge and a history that may just help you.
So ask these 5 questions of anyone you meet!
What other projects have they done that are similar to yours?
Do they have the team to deal with any complications that you foresee?
What are they offering that the others aren’t?
Do they understand your vision?
Do you trust & like them?
So if you could answer these questions positively then you’ll be onto a winner, you’re about to trust them with your families future so make sure you can trust them.
And if you take away one thing from this remember ….. nobody wants to buy a drill, they want to buy a hole, the drill just gives them the opportunity. So when you are looking for your architect, remember you aren’t looking for your architect, you’re looking for your dream home. The architect is merely part of the vehicle.
You’ve decided you want to renovate & build, whats the first steps? How do you make sure you find the right architect?
There are several ways you can look, we all know that word of mouth is important, if you know someone who knows someone who had a brilliant experience with ‘MrArchitect’ then brilliant, but what if you don’t?
